From tragedy to triumph . . .
On April 27, 2017, one woman’s life changed forever. On that fateful day, Dr. T. R. Murali, well known Madurai-based urologist, died of suicide. Overwhelmed by pain and anguish at the tragic demise of her husband, Dr. Nandini Murali, a survivor of suicide loss, decided to “SPEAK about suicide.”
“When my husband died, I was filled with a deep sense of shame. Until then, suicide was something that happened to other people. I wondered what I’d tell family and friends about the cause of the death. I feared that I would be ‘judged’ and blamed. I feared that suicide would be perceived as a character flaw. I feared that it would eclipse the fact that Dr. Murali was a brilliant and responsible person, both personally and professionally. However, at that moment, I made a conscious choice to SPEAK. Someone had to do this… if I chose to keep quiet, wouldn’t I too be part of the stigma that threatened to engulf me?” recalls Dr. Nandini Murali, who today has a special interest in enabling survivors of suicide loss reconstruct their lives after they have been impacted by the tragic loss of their loved ones by suicide. |
